CHOOSE YOUR ATTITUDE means taking responsibility for how you want to show up for the people you lead. While you can’t control what happens to you, you can decide how to respond.

You control your attitude, instead of your attitude controlling you.

Become aware. The first step in choosing your attitude is to be clear about what your attitude is and to accept that you are the one who is choosing it.  

Make a conscious choice. Once you understand that your choice impacts everyone around you, you can ask yourself, “Is my attitude helping my team or my customers? Is it helping me to reach my goals? Is it helping me to be the person I want to be?”

Reshape our perceptions. Our words create our world. Notice the words you speak and think.  Are the words that will create the life and culture you desire?

Strengthen relationships; disagreements and problems come and go.

Your relationships with your team—the people you depend on—are not so transitory.  Do you respond to temporary issues in a way that builds lasting relationships?

Build commitment. Sometimes leaders deliver a message in a way that people are not ready to hear.  Approaching the same issue with a new attitude—to show people what you care about, to live it yourself and show people that you care about them—can build new commitment to a goal or change.

TIPS on Choosing Your Attitude

• We can often adjust our attitude just by shifting our physiology, or posture.  What type of posture would make you feel more confident or positive? Choose that and try it out!

• Each day choose what you’d like to accomplish.  Choose a word to describe how you’d like to be that will help you most likely to succeed (focused, patient, energised, etc.,) and write it on a post it and stick it in a good place to be a constant reminder.  This helps you not only keep choosing but noticing how the word helps shape your attitude and your impact on others.

• Start your day with a list of the things you are grateful for.

• Ask your team which things in the workplace affect their attitude the most (could be good or bad). Determine as a team what you can do about them!

• Go ahead, laugh at yourself!
