1. Practise and Encourage Sharing
If employees are unaware of the larger goals of the company or a project, then they will not feel involved. Even though you cannot inform each employee of every large or small goal, make sure that they know your expectations for the project or a task. Sharing goals with employees helps them to understand their role better so that they build better work ethics.
It is important to remember that employees supervise themselves too. If they feel like they want to be a part of the team and the company, then they will be more likely to set high standards for themselves.
2. Guide, Don’t Correct
Adults do not like to be corrected. When you spot an employee doing something wrong, always guide them to the right path. Guiding is helping the other person to a take different path whereas correcting is telling the other person that their path is wrong. Guiding is positive whereas correcting has negative connotations. Here is an example:
“You will find it easy to analyse data if you track each movement.” – Guiding
“You are not tracking each movement. You won’t be able to analyse data properly if you don’t.” – Correcting
3. Maintain Your Authority
You need to master the difficult balance of maintaining authority while being polite, friendly and civil. An effective method to do that is to manage your communications. You do not want to be too friendly with your team and discuss personal matters with them. At the same time, you do not want to discuss just work. To maintain a balance, you can use short communications about neutral topics such as sports, news, weather, etc. This will help you to avoid too much familiarisation and also create a more friendly work environment.
4. Keep Yourself and Others Motivated
To perform at the best of your ability, you need to motivate yourself. Some good methods to keep yourself motivated are watching motivational movies, reading motivational articles and books, including biographies, and listening to motivational speeches.
To keep employees motivated, you can use team slogans, applaud the efforts of the employees, throw them a surprise party, and give them genuine compliments. An employee motivated to do better will be more satisfied and productive, and will not feel burdened or tired by making the extra effort to do better.
5. Care Leads to Trust
You must encourage members of your team to do things for others. It can be a simple act of bringing coffee for a colleague or providing some small help on a project. To build an atmosphere of care, you must help out others when they do not expect it and also guide others to do the same. If team members care for each other’s well being, they will naturally have built trust in one another.
